We were asked by freelance ethnographer, mindfulness coach and general all-round hero Sarah Waite to create a sound installation for a series of mindful running sessions she curated in the ancient forest outside the gates of Wilderness Festival. We created a rainforest soundscape using a collection of portable speakers connected to iPods loaded with our sounds and hidden at various distances from the route through the trees. The runners experienced frogs on the ground, monkeys howling from the canopy, rivers, waterfalls and various other rainforest sounds both right on top of them and far away behind the undergrowth. This was accompanied by a sculptural installation by accessories designer, film maker, prop designer and art director Fred Butler.
